Patricia Kooy Obituary

Pat was born in Kalispell, Montana, and moved to California with her family when she was 8 years old. She graduated from Holy Names High School in Oakland, CA, then earned a degree in art at Hayward State. Using her newly acquired art degree, Pat worked for a local company designing logos. Her job there was of short duration, since she really didn't like using her art this way.Pat then began substitute teaching, which led to a 35-year teaching career at the first and second grade levels. Pat loved teaching children and maintained contact with many of her students, even attending many high school and college graduations, and some weddings, including Juanita Lopez, who helped care for her in her final year.

In 1978, Pat met Harvey and they enjoyed being married for 44 years. Through all her years of teaching, Pat enjoyed many hobbies during her free time. She loved to paint and gave many of her paintings as gifts. She also loved to share her arts and crafts to celebrate holidays and birthdays. Their home was a swinging door for many pursuits, from family and friends gatherings for barbecues and swim parties, to vegetable co-ops, boutiques, tutoring, and cookie swaps. Pat was an avid baker, canned pickles, and loved to cook. Her favorite dish was chimichangas and she often made a meal called 'Refrigerator," which she created from all the leftovers in the fridge.Pat enjoyed having meals at the dinner table and always included prayers of thanks as well as a unison "Guten Appetit", which means good appetite in German. Pat and Harvey also began enjoying meals they purchased from Schwan's home delivery which they used for many years even before it was almost a necessity to order food delivery.Together they also enjoyed dancing anywhere they would hear a good song and good times included traveling, especially on cruises and to Horseshoe Tournaments.Pat's Sunday ritual was attending Mass and seeing friends, of which she had many. Favorite holidays were 4th of July and Christmas, and especially loved to display her many hand-crafted decorations and being able to celebrate with friends and family. Pat also loved to play her guitar and sing for her students and family. Everyone who knew Pat, knew her as, 'Aunty Pat,' not only family, but all the children in the cul de sac where they lived. Pat had a special bond with her nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and loved them as though they were her own children and grandchildren. She was one who taught and inspired the importance of family to all of them. Pat also opened her home to everyone in her life there was never a time where anyone was not welcome.Aunty Pat leaves her beloved husband Harvey Kooy, and her two sisters' children: three nephews, two nieces, two great nephews and two great nieces and two great great nieces and one great great nephew. She also leaves four stepchildren, 7 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren, as well as her two dearly loved lap dogs Paki and Punkin, along with a world of people whose lives she touched. She will be missed.
