Jack Mason, 1911-1985, was a reporter and later an editor for The Oakland Tribune, retiring in 1964.
A life-long resident of West Marin, Jack became a chronicler of the
area's history after his retirement from the Tribune. He wrote numerous
books published a quarterly journal, and he and his wife, Jean, opened
a small museum in their Inverness house,
which was called The Gables, to display their extensive collection of
books, manuscripts, photos, and artifacts of West Marin History.
After his death, his wish of leaving the museum to the people of
West Marin was fulfilled. The Inverness Branch of the Marin County Free
Library and the Jack Mason Museum of West Marin History now occupy his
former residence, thus assuring that the work
he began would continue and grow.
