Morton " Mort" Cathro

Feb. 3, 1924 - Sept. 29, 2018

Oakland-born Morton Cathro, who traveled over one-million miles to six continents as the Tribune's first travel writer, passed away peacefully near his Moraga home Sept. 29th. Cathro was best known for his thrice-weekly "Travelin' Light" which was one of the longest-running travel columns in American newspapers. Paradoxically, he was not a born wanderer at heart and often quoted Samuel Johnson, "I should like to spend the whole of my life traveling if I had another life to spend at home."
Cathro was also a lifelong fan of thoroughbred horse-racing and he wrote for many horse-racing publications across the country after retiring in 1987.
Donations may be made to the Edwin J. Gregson Foundation (www.gregsonfoundation.com) in Morton's honor as this equine/philanthropic non-profit was also dear to his heart.
