SHIRLEY CLARK SMITH




Born October 13, 1914 - Died November 18, 2004 at Oakland CA. She was 90. Editorial Reporter.

A 65-year resident of Oakland, died Thursday, November 18, at Lakepark Retirement Residence of heart failure. Mrs. Smith was born in Montalvo, Ventura County, California, October 13, 1914 . Last month she had celebrated her 90th birthday with family and friends. She had moved to Oakland after graduating in journalism from the University of Washington. She pursued a career in journalism, first as a publicity agent for several non-profit organizations, including the Children's Hospital of the East Bay and the March of Dimes. She then joined the Civil Defense Agency of the City of Oakland, where she was awarded the Oakland Junior of Chambers Good City Employee Award. 

She worked for the Oakland Tribune for over 20 years in various editorial capacities, including general reporter. Among the biggest stories she covered was an atomic test where she witnessed the blast from a forward trench. After leaving the Tribune, she served as press relations manager for the BART Bond Campaign and the Oakland Museum's Bond Campaign. During her retirement she served as a chairman of the History Guild at the Oakland Museum of California, where she was awarded an honorary life membership. Mrs. Smith is survived by her son, Clark Smith of Lincoln, Calif., and two stepdaughters, Linda Heylin of Brookdale and Diana Riley of Grass Valley. She has six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial gathering will be held January 8 at Lakepark Retirement Residence at 2 p.m. Remembrances may be made to the Oakland History Guild.
