Irish Johnny J Smith worked in street sales dept in San Francisco for over 25 years Along with Bill Davenport and Ollie Alves they opened up the city for Tribune sales in racks, stores, hotels, etc in the 50's Before joining the Tribune he was all Navy Welter weight champion during WW2 after a pro career he became a weekly boxing editor and historian. Grew up in Livermore with his pals Max & Buddy Bear they loved Johnny and went to a couple of his fights to support their pal which he won.He was always into helping the less fortunate he would actually give you his last dollar.
