John G. Johnston

 May 31, 1937 to Sept. 9, 2009

John was devoted to his family and many lifelong friends. He taught his daughters to always be honest and truthful, to stand up for who and what they believe in and to always give 100% no matter what. His love, strength, wisdom and compassion will forever remain with them.
John was born in San Francisco and raised in Oakland, CA. He served 3 years on the USS Caiman submarine in the Navy. After his service he started working at the Oakland  Tribune 1960 through 1967 . In 1967 John took a position at the Tacoma News Tribune and moved his family to Olympia. He retired from the Tribune in 2006 and was an Elks member for 43 years. He loved to travel and was passionate about his cooking. John was also a fierce fan of the Mariners and the Seattle Seahawks.
He is survived by his wife, Beatrice; three daughters, Terri Barrett of Sacramento, CA, Tracy Johnston of Olympia, WA, Kelly Johnston of Woodinville, WA; one step-daughter, Cassandra Doss of Belgrade, MT; three grandchildren, Christopher, Brianna and Brayden; two brothers-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the staff of Renal Care Group NW in Lacey and to those at St Peter Hospital who cared for him with such love and compassion. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday September 15, 2009 at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 5930 Mullen Road SE, Lacey. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in the memory of John to the National Kidney Foundation at www.Kidney.org/Support .
