Virgil
Meibert passed away peacefully at his Gold River home on March 18,
2013. Born November 23, 1934, in Cleveland, Ohio, his family moved to
Phoenix, Arizona in his youth. He attended North Phoenix High School and
graduated from Arizona State College with a degree in journalism. He
began his journalistic career with The Arizona Republic in 1952 as a
copy boy while attending college. After a two year period with the US
Marine Corps, he returned to The Republic until moving to California in
1960, accepting a reporter job with The Hayward Daily Review. In 1963 he
joined The Oakland Tribune as a
reporter and was promoted to the Editorial staff for eight years, the
last four as Chief Editorial Writer. He was appointed Capital Bureau
Chief for the paper in 1973 and relocated to Sacramento. He went on to
work for The Contra Costa Times in a similar position prior to his
retirement from journalism in 1995. In that same year, he accepted the
position of Research Aide for the Senate Rules Committee. He retired as a
Consultant with the same Committee in 2011.
Survivors include his wife, Carole, sons Kenneth and David, and grandchildren Stephanie, Emily and Logan.
The
family also wishes to express its gratitude to Emanuel 'Manny' Dirar
for his care and devotion to Virgil over the last months of his life.
